Landslide kills 35 in Xinjiang amid heavy rains

Rescue efforts ongoing after landslide buries houses in village in Kunlun Mountains of Kashgar Prefecture.

Mahmut Atanur - BEIJING (AA) – A landslide triggered by heavy rainfall has left at least 35 people dead in China’s northwest Xinjiang Uighur Autonomous Region, state media reported Thursday.

China Radio International cited local authorities as saying that the landslide hit a village in the Kunlun Mountains of Kashgar Prefecture in the early hours of Wednesday.

Rescue efforts in the area, where houses were left buried and roadways damaged, are ongoing.

The village is located around 170 kilometers (106 miles) from the seat of Yecheng County.
