Stock market records biggest monthly gain since October.
NEW YORK (AA) – U.S. stocks closed mixed Thursday but recorded monthly and quarterly gains.
The Dow decreased 31 points to close the first quarter of the year at 17,685. The S&P declined 4 points to close at 2,059 and the Nasdaq rose less than one point to end at 4,869.
The stock market in March had its biggest monthly gain since October with the three indices adding approximately 7 percent each.
The Dow rose by 1.5 percent in the first quarter of 2016, the S&P 500 had a 0.8 percent increase but the Nasdaq fell by nearly 3 percent -- its worst quarter since September.
Meanwhile, the dollar fell 8.5 percent during the month – its worst monthly performance since September 2010.
Oil prices recorded a 14 percent increase in March. American benchmark West Texas Intermediate traded at $38.17 per barrel at the end of trading Thursday, while international benchmark Brent crude was at $40.16 a barrel.
